The Willaston Village Tree

Have you been to Willaston? A beautiful village on the Wirral Cheshire border, close to Chester, Liverpool and North Wales. A village steeped in history is centred around a village green, creating a focal point for the residents and visitors in the area. At the centre of the village green is The Willaston Village Tree, much loved by the community and part of the history of the village.

In 1935 a small Copper Beech tree was planted in the middle of the Willaston Village green, celebrating the Silver Jubilee of King George V. Over the past 80+ years the tree has grown into a magnificent centrepiece, complementing the listed buildings that surround the green and creating the well-known, picturesque scene that surrounds the Willaston Village Tree.

There are many events held around the tree during the year, village fetes, Morris Dancing, festivals, community events, but one of the most notable are Christmas Carols. Residents and visitors are welcomed to the green and sing carols under the tree which is decorated with Christmas lights, creating the most beautiful atmosphere and community spirit.

This year the Willaston Village Tree may not have any lights. Sadly, the lights need replacing and the Council have advised that there is no budget for replacements. The Residents Society have set up a group, Willaston Christmas Lights, who will undertake different fundraising activities, aiming to raise enough money to replace the lights on the tree.

The group needs support, volunteers, ideas and offers of help to ensure that this historic landmark remains the focal point of the village this Christmas and for many years to come.
