It’s Healthy to be Outside

Are you stuck inside most of the time? Working all day indoors, at home in the evening? Travel by car or bus? Does modern life get in the way of relaxation and can you get away from looking at smartphones and computers all day? How often do you get outside and re-charge your batteries? We all know it’s healthy to be outside, but you don’t have to be running or doing serious exercise to reap the benefits, just being outside can do us the power of good.

It’s Healthy to be Outside

  • Sunlight – Natural sunlight gives us the best source of Vitamin D, a hormone that is essential to the body by providing and maintaining a healthy immune system. A shortage of Vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis and Alzheimers and good levels of vitamin D can help prevent diabetes, and heart disease.
  • Natural Eye Health – prolonged periods in front of computer and tv screens can lead to blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches and neck/back pain. There are studies that suggest that artificial light can also cause nearsightedness. Getting outside helps us to focus on items in the distance and correct our posture and the natural light can help prevent the onset of nearsightedness.

  • Improved Sleep – Increased time indoors and exposure to artificial light can alter our internal body clock, normally related to the daylight schedule. Our bodies can become confused by artificial light and the glare from technology devices, interrupting our sleep/wake pattern and causing sleep disruption. Natural daylight can reset our body clocks and help us to maintain a better sleep pattern, therefore feeling more rested.
  • Fresh Air – We all know that fresh air is good for us. Being outside and away from traffic can help cleanse our bodies from everyday pollutants and fumes, helping to prevent, amongst other things, heart disease, lung disease and asthma.
  • Exercise – Getting outside means we will naturally become more active, even gentle exercise such as a light walk has huge health benefits. Sitting too much can lead to health and fitness issues, stepping outside has so many health benefits and most importantly gets your body working as it should be.
  • Psychological Health – Spending time outside improves our mental health and wellbeing. Studies have shown it can increase our attention span, can boost serotonin levels (feel-good factor in our bodies) and can stimulate our brains in a positive manner, helping us to feel more positive about life.
