Fresh, Free Range and Seasonal Food at Pollards Inn

Fresh, Free Range and Seasonal Food at Pollards Inn

Do you like fresh, seasonal vegetables? What about free range food? When you go out for a meal, do you take notice of whether the food is locally sourced? Are you bothered about seasonal food? The choice is yours, but there are many benefits to eating what is in season and sourced locally which is why, whenever possible, the kitchen team use fresh, free range and seasonal food at Pollards Inn in Willaston, Wirral.

Fresh, Free Range and Seasonal Food at Pollards Inn

As the weather changes in the UK, different produce becomes available, whilst other foods fade away until next season. Using local, seasonal produce is not always available, but when it is, there are many benefits including:

  • Better Taste – in season produce is fresher, tastes better and is usually perfectly ripe as reduced time in transportation is needed, meaning less time in chilled environments which can affect taste.
  • Lower Costs – harvesting produce during the season means it is a lot more available, reduced transportation costs and no storage needed. This knock-on effect on consumers means that buying fresh produce can be cheaper and businesses can provide better quality, more choice and more volume for the same amount of money.
  • Fresher Food – locally grown, locally harvested often results in the produce retaining more of the natural vitamins, fibre and minerals, often lost in distant harvesting and transported produce.
  • Better for the Body – eating fresh food provides the body with more vitamins and minerals, essential for the body. Seasonal produce often provides the relevant and required nutrients associated with the seasons, helping us to maintain good health and a balanced diet.
  • Friendly to the Environment – out of season produce is grown or reared away from the area meaning everything needs transporting. Locally sourced food cuts down on all the associated pollutants from travel by land, sea and air.

Fresh, Free Range and Seasonal Food at Pollards Inn

The team at Pollards Inn are proud to say

“We try and source all of the very best ingredients from the local area which are seasonal, fresh & free range where ever possible. All our food is cooked to order and we are here to help with any questions with dietary requirements or special requests.”

The Perfect Steak at Pollards Inn, Willaston

The Perfect Steak at Pollards Inn, Willaston

How do you like your steak? Medium, Rare or well-done? With chips or fries? With a sauce or plain? Everyone has their own tastes, but most importantly your steak needs to be great quality and cooked to your liking. Get the basics right and you’ll get a meal to dine for! Why not take the guess-work out of cooking and leave it to the professionals and treat your selves to the perfect steak at Pollards Inn, Willaston.

The Perfect Steak at Pollards Inn, Willaston

Cooking Your Steak

Use a heavy-weight frying pan gets great results, or a heavy griddle pan, helping to get the right level of charring to the meat and adding that extra level of taste. Place your room-temperature meat into a really hot pan, making sure that there is plenty of room in the pan. A little oil in the pan or on the steak will help the cooking and enhance the flavour, remembering that oil in the pan needs to be hot to prevent under-browning. For those that don’t like to use oil, careful seasoning can bring out the natural taste of the meat, just don’t add salt too early as it can draw moisture from the steak.

The Perfect Steak at Pollards Inn, Willaston

How Do You Like Your Steak?

How long a steak should be cooked is the choice of the diner. Whenever a steak is being served there should be the choice of how you would like it cooking. Checks to see how well cooked a steak is include:

  • Rare – When cutting the steak it should be dark red in colour with juices flowing. The meat should feel soft and spongy with slight firmness
  • Medium-rare – A lighter pink colour with a little less juice flowing.  The meat will be a little soft, spongy and springy.
  • Medium – The meat should be pale pink in the middle with hardly any juice flowing, feeling firm and springy.
  • Well-done – The meat should have a little pinkness but not dry, feeling soft and slightly springy.

The Perfect Steak at Pollards Inn, Willaston

Let Your Steak Rest After Cooking

One of the most important things to do when cooking any meat, including steaks, is to let the cooked meat rest. This is where the scientific bit happens, allowing the fibres in the meat to relax after cooking, helping them to reabsorb the juices and flavours of the meat. A general rule of thumb is to allow meat to rest for about half the time of the cooking, suggesting a steak should rest for at least 5 minutes after cooking.

Cooking steaks takes knowledge, training and practice and the team at Pollards Inn are experts. They understand the importance and intricacies of how to cook your steak, exactly as you like it.

It’s Healthy to be Outside

Are you stuck inside most of the time? Working all day indoors, at home in the evening? Travel by car or bus? Does modern life get in the way of relaxation and can you get away from looking at smartphones and computers all day? How often do you get outside and re-charge your batteries? We all know it’s healthy to be outside, but you don’t have to be running or doing serious exercise to reap the benefits, just being outside can do us the power of good.

It’s Healthy to be Outside

  • Sunlight – Natural sunlight gives us the best source of Vitamin D, a hormone that is essential to the body by providing and maintaining a healthy immune system. A shortage of Vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis and Alzheimers and good levels of vitamin D can help prevent diabetes, and heart disease.
  • Natural Eye Health – prolonged periods in front of computer and tv screens can lead to blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches and neck/back pain. There are studies that suggest that artificial light can also cause nearsightedness. Getting outside helps us to focus on items in the distance and correct our posture and the natural light can help prevent the onset of nearsightedness.

It’s Healthy to be Outside

  • Improved Sleep – Increased time indoors and exposure to artificial light can alter our internal body clock, normally related to the daylight schedule. Our bodies can become confused by artificial light and the glare from technology devices, interrupting our sleep/wake pattern and causing sleep disruption. Natural daylight can reset our body clocks and help us to maintain a better sleep pattern, therefore feeling more rested.
  • Fresh Air – We all know that fresh air is good for us. Being outside and away from traffic can help cleanse our bodies from everyday pollutants and fumes, helping to prevent, amongst other things, heart disease, lung disease and asthma.
  • Exercise – Getting outside means we will naturally become more active, even gentle exercise such as a light walk has huge health benefits. Sitting too much can lead to health and fitness issues, stepping outside has so many health benefits and most importantly gets your body working as it should be.
  • Psychological Health – Spending time outside improves our mental health and wellbeing. Studies have shown it can increase our attention span, can boost serotonin levels (feel-good factor in our bodies) and can stimulate our brains in a positive manner, helping us to feel more positive about life.

It’s Healthy to be Outside

We all know that being outside is good for us, so take the plunge, switch off those devices and get outside with the family. If you need a destination or somewhere to complete your day out, then enjoy being outside at Pollards Inn, Willaston, the perfect place to relax, enjoy and unwind. Sunny afternoons can be spent outside in the lovely manicured gardens with friends and family, relaxing whilst the children play in the separate, private play area, allowing you to linger that little longer before returning to your regular routine. What better way to chill out, enjoy a little downtime with people that you love and get all the benefits of being outside in the fresh air.

How Many Years Have You Been Married?

Modern times have adopted these traditions and created Silver wedding anniversaries and Golden wedding anniversaries. The Willaston Village Tree

Have you been to Willaston? A beautiful village on the Wirral Cheshire border, close to Chester, Liverpool and North Wales. A village steeped in history is centred around a village green, creating a focal point for the residents and visitors in the area. At the centre of the village green is The Willaston Village Tree, much loved by the community and part of the history of the village.

The Willaston Village Tree

In 1935 a small Copper Beech tree was planted in the middle of the Willaston Village green, celebrating the Silver Jubilee of King George V. Over the past 80+ years the tree has grown into a magnificent centrepiece, complementing the listed buildings that surround the green and creating the well-known, picturesque scene that surrounds the Willaston Village Tree.

The Willaston Village Tree

There are many events held around the tree during the year, village fetes, Morris Dancing, festivals, community events, but one of the most notable are Christmas Carols. Residents and visitors are welcomed to the green and sing carols under the tree which is decorated with Christmas lights, creating the most beautiful atmosphere and community spirit.

The Willaston Village Tree

This year the Willaston Village Tree may not have any lights. Sadly, the lights need replacing and the Council have advised that there is no budget for replacements. The Residents Society have set up a group, Willaston Christmas Lights, who will undertake different fundraising activities, aiming to raise enough money to replace the lights on the tree.

The Willaston Village Tree

The group needs support, volunteers, ideas and offers of help to ensure that this historic landmark remains the focal point of the village this Christmas and for many years to come.
